Coon Hunting
These hunters gather for the heart and soul of the sport: a small group of friends, a handful of hounds, and a dark night full of riveting excitement
and possibility.
Coon hunting is an old sport and has long been a part of American heritage and tradition. In times past, some fathers have spent countless hours a field with their children teaching them about hunting, gun safety and etiquette, responsibility, respect of property, and conservation. Keeping children interested in the outdoors provides another outlet for their interest and keeps them from wandering elsewhere. As with most hunting, Coon hunting has come under fire from the anti-hunting activists with their own political agendas and no knowledge of animal conservation. That is why included this section to address some issues.
Coon hunting with hounds involves training hounds to hunt, trail, and tree a raccoon. Hounds used for Coon hunting are trained to trail coon and only coon and not to attack any other game (deer, fox, rabbits, etc.). The hound searches for the scent of a coon and opens (barks) upon finding the trail. He then trails the coon giving mouth as track dictates till the tree coon is in is found, or the coon is forced to take refuge in a tree. He then locates and trees with a distinctive bark telling hunters the coon is treed. In competition, upon arriving, the coon is located, tree scored, and coon is left in tree. However, in training, coons are sometimes harvested. This serves to instill the desire for the hound to want to tree the coon, and to keep him focused on the coon alone. It also serves in conservation in keeping the coon numbers in check.
